Drew from Dredg recently sat down to answer questions from Shoutweb users. The cryptic California band will be releasing their follow-up to "Leitmotif" in the Spring on Interscope. Shoutweb: We know the new album is coming out sometime soon, what can we expect different from your new album to your old record "leifmotif"? Will it follow in the same way "leimotif" was written, as a concept album? Drew: The new album is a concept album..... it sounds more professionally recorded...more focused..... the flow from song to song is the same.... interweaving and instrumentals inbetween.... Shoutweb: How did you guys come up with this style of music? It sounds like nothing else out there and I'm wondering if this was always set in your mind, that you guys had to sound different then the rest. Drew: We have always strived to sound different..... even to the point that if one drum beat was similar to another one of our songs... we would change it.... but we have not tried to invent a new style of music... we just include instruments... Shoutweb: In the wake of recents tragedies, do you believe that your music can take on new meanings to allow people listening to it move through this time of pain and hurt easier? Drew: Yes and no.....music does different things to each individual... i would hope that it makes ears smile...not hate. Shoutweb: Your music is hard to define and leaves alot to the imagination, who are your influences (in music or anything else) and how do you fuse those influences together to make the beautiful music that you do?. Drew: influences? paint music touch smell... read...... our biggest muse is originality....... Shoutweb: How do you feel "Leitmotif" compares to more recent material, such as "Of The Room" or "Three Legged Horse"? Drew: leitmotif was written three years ago....the music has bloomed..... it is always moving..even from yesterday to today.... our new music is more evolved... Shoutweb: Why does Dredg like to stay(in a sense) a mystery? No promotion posters, no concert photos? Dredg: We want people to listen.......not to judge by appearance.... please listen..thats what our ears are for..... music has no eyes..... Shoutweb: Would you ever compromise your artistic integrity for the sake of mainstream success, or are you happy staying more of a non-visible band? Drew: never compromise. Shoutweb: When you go out into the desert to write your songs, is it like a group jam session, or an individual thing where you write the stuff and piece it together? Drew: both ....... more group though..... Shoutweb: When Gavin writes his lyrics, what state of mind does he go into or what state of mind does his lyrics put him in? Drew: the state of pure awareness...... Shoutweb: How do you manage to still get an education while staying together with the band and does your education influence any of the bands ideas? Drew: books are the best source.... education influences every single one of our ideas.... ...the flight and the ethereal became one, brushstrokes and sound colliding. -dredg www.dredg.com
